Kind Knight, or Clever Conman?

During the conclusion of the Wife of Bath's Tale, did the knight truly care for his wife enough to allow her to make the decision regarding her fidelity and appearance? Or was the knight clever enough to realize that this might be another test, and tricked the woman himself? “My lady and my love, and my wife so dear, I put myself in your wise governance” (The Wife of Bath’s Tale, lines 1230-1231). Additionally, was the knight redeemed after his quest for knowledge? Why should a rapist deserve a beautiful and faithful wife?
